We are getting married!

On Boxing Day of 2020 David James Allan ended up getting on one knee. No-one was more surprised than me! It’s such an exciting time planning a wedding, it’s also daunting and you get overloaded with information, to the point that you think your head is going to explode! I am so looking forward to sharing this journey with you all, my ideas, my inspiration and finally the actual day!!

We got LOADS of wedding venues booked for viewings, and we went with a really wide range of venues. Stately homes, hotels and castles we viewed them all. I thought I wanted a stately home wedding not a hotel and I had my mind made up. But, as with anything what I thought I wanted was not actually exactly what I wanted.

We viewed the following properties, and they were all lovely so anyone looking to get married in North Yorkshire then please go and have a look at these.

  1. Howsham Hall

  2. Rise Hall

  3. Thicket Priory

  4. Grantly Hall

  5. Rudding Park

  6. Middleton Lodge

  7. Birdsall House

  8. Grinkle Park

  9. Cave Castle

They all had their pro’s and cons a couple were more on the lower budget side and a couple were at the real top end of the budget. I had one not so pleasent encounter with one venue, not that they were terribly awful or anything but it was one of the venues (I won’t mention the name) that was really pricey, and don’t get me wrong it was absolutely stunning but their customer service was shocking. I had to rearrange the initial viewing because Prince Philips Funeral was on the same day and racing was bought forward really early and there was just no chance in hell that Dave and I could look at the venue and get from the venue to the racecourse in time. I rang them as soon as I found out and the woman was very curt and abrupt on the phone. Understandably it is frustrating certainly with the current climate but there was nothing I could do. Anyhow, we rearranged and we went to look around and it was beautiful, we discussed a date for them to send over a proposal and they sent the wrong date - bear in mind they took a week to send it over to me. I then replied back informing them of this and, 2 weeks later I still haven’t heard anything back. Now the amount of money they wanted to do the wedding the customer service should be a lot better than that!!

After all the trawling round venues we saw a couple that we really did like and if I got married there I would have been happy but when we went to Rudding Park we new straight away it was the venue for us. They were so warm and friendly and lovely, the venue is absolutely stunning and the Chapel, wow. Considering myself and Dave didn't want a church/chapel wedding, and I wasn't keen on getting married in a hotel we are now getting married in a Chapel on the grounds of a hotel! Oh how things work out. Its just proof that if you are in the same situation as we are keep you mind open because I guarantee that the venue you think you want won’t be the one you will fall in love with!

So the date is set - 17th November 2021 myself and Dave will be tying the not and Rudding Park and I cannot wait.

Along this journey I will share things that work, things that haven’t. Where I found ways to cut costs and were I think money needs to be spent. I will share my inspiration boards, my visions and how our day will be. I cannot wait to take you on this journey. But for now we have a deposit on a venue to pay and Bridesmaids to propose to.

Until next time

5 must read books

Five books that everyone should read at least once in their lives

It is no secret that I LOVE reading, it is something that has helped me through some of the toughest times. It is an amazing form of escapism, you can create the characters in your head to be whatever you want them to be - unlike a film where the vision of a character is someone else’s. There are so many books that I love, so narrowing it down to 5 was pretty tricky. Keep scrolling if you want some reading inspo and do let me know if you have read any of my recommendations or have gone and read them because of my recommendations, I would love to know!

the girl with a pearl earring

TRACY CHEVALIER

IMG_4813.JPG

Tracy Chavalier’s novel is one inspired by the great painting - the Girl with a Pearl Earring, by one of the worlds great artist - Vameer. The picture poses many questions amongst art critics, it is unknown who the girl in the painting is, posing one of arts greatest mysteries. The ambiguous look on the girls face, the look of longing and loss got Tracy Chavalier thinking about the story behind the painting.

The novel follows 16 year old Griet after she is forced to leave home in 1664 after her father is blinded. She finds herself in the employment as a maid under the great artist Vameer where she battles friendships, tough relationships, and heartache. With trials and tribulations the novel takes us on a wonderful journey with Griet.

Chavalier portrays 17th century Delft so magically and wonderfully - the novel is haunting yet beautiful, mysterious and steeped in atmosphere as we discover who the Girl with a Pearl Earring is. A truly wonderful novel.

pride and prejudice

JANE AUSTIN

What book review would be complete without a Jane Austin novel? One of my all time favourites, this book is so beautiful and portrays the trials and tribulations of 18th century match making so wonderfully that you will fall in love with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy.

Upon meeting Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet holds a great disdain for his arrogance, rudeness and pompous actions. Through the ups and downs of family courtships, the devilish Mr Wicombe and the silliness of Elizabeth Bennets younger sister, the true intentions of the wealthy Mr Darcy are revealed and Elizabeth Bennet is forced to reconsider her initial thoughts about Mr Darcy.

A feel good novel, if you can get past the 18th century jargon, it really is the most beautiful novel ever written. It takes you on a journey of love, pride and prejudice. Elizabeth Bennet is undoubtably one of the most influential heroines of all time.

inferno

DAN BROWN

Never has there been a novel more apt to the current climate than Inferno. Controversially, some may say, this for me is better than both Angel and Deamon’s and the Da Vinci Code.

The fourth book in the Robert Langdon series, Dan Brown once again takes us on an action packed journey full of mystery, intrigue and, of course, the brilliance of Robert Langdon.

Langdon finds himself in a race against time to save all of human kind, but what is it that he is saving human kind from? Another brilliant novel by Dan Brown and if you love an action packed page turner then you will love this book.

MARKUS ZUSAK

The novel follows orphan Liesel in 1938 Germany, as she settles into her new home with her foster parents. When her foster father - Hans - finds out the Liesel cannot read he introduces her to the power of the written language. This ignites a love of books for young Liesel where she begins her own collection gathering them from any place she can, even taking one from a Nazi bonfire. The family barely scrape by but their situation becomes even more precarious when they hide a Jew in their basement.

A beautifully written novel, portraying Nazi Germany as the horrific ordeal that it was. This novel will make you smile and cry in equal measure, taking you and an emotional roller coaster. The novel is haunting yet beautiful, deeply tragic yet optimistic, so terribly sad yet so incredibly heart warming. This novel will truly give you an insight into war time Germany to its fullest. One of my all time favourite books.

ALICE WALKER

Here is a true literary masterpiece. This prize winning novel is set in the harsh, segregated world of the Deep South between wars. Cecile has been raped by the man she calls father, her 2 children have been taken away from her and she has been forced into an ugly and cruel marriage. She has no one to talk to but God.

Along comes Shug Avery, a magically charismatic singer and upon meeting her Cecile discovers that not all female rivalry is painful and torturous but in fact she discovers the love and support of women.

Cecile portrays her story with her letters to God. This book will tear you heart to pieces, it will leave you wide eyed and mouth open. So frank and honest, it is a harrowing inside to what life was like for the African American population in segregated Georgia.

NEW PRODUCTS!

Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend. It have been a busy busy busy weekend for Maisie Turner Designs but one I have loved. Bringing new products is something that I enjoy so much about having my own little business and these last three product launches I have been so excited and proud to share with you.

You probably have seen them on my social media but for those that haven’t I wanted to show you to them and talk you through each new launch. So here we go …

new card designs

Simple Grape Photo Email Header Banner.png

Introducing three brand new card designs to run perfectly in line with the Nursery Collection. These three designs all use the three designs from the Nursery Collection and all have the wording - ‘Welcome to the World Little One’. I chose to use the same wording enabling the sender to pick the animal they think would be most appropriate or the animal they like the most without having to compromise on wording. This makes shopping these cards very simple and easy and will be a beautiful card to send to anyone you know who has just welcomed into the world a new baby.

plain cards

Modern New Listing Real Estate Instagram Post.png

Also in the card launch I have added two plain card designs. I had a couple of people ask if I would do any cards without the captions so I listened and I gave. Some designs just don’t lend themselves to not having any captions to them, just with the composition of them they look a little lost on their own. These designs, however, look stunning just taking up the full card space and really do all the talking for you without the need of words. Being plain these cards will lend themselves to being sent for any reason you like so go and check them. out

bookmarks

Neutral Elegant Boho Accessories Flash Sale Instagram Post.png

The second launch of the Bank Holiday was the extension of the bookmark collection. The bookmarks have been so popular and so it has been a little over due to expand the collection. I have added these three lovely designs that fit the shape of the bookmark so well. The first design is my beautiful Billy Boodles finished off with complimentary purple with silver glittery, handmade tassel using a finer yarn. The second design is the Three Little Ducks, again finished off with a handmade turquoise tassel made with chunky yarn - much like the first three designs in this collection. The last design is the Zebra foal. Finished off with the handmade tassel in the same yarn as the Billy bookmark, but in white. These bookmarks are such a lovely addition to the book self, I know I love seeing the hassles pop out of my books.

notepads

Simple Grape Photo Email Header Banner copy.png

The final launch was a BRAND NEW PRODUCT! These amazing notepads. NOTEPADS. These came about when I was chatting to a work colleague who LOVES puffins so I was showing her (through the power of teams) the cards I had with the puffins and she asked if I did note pads. So I went and thought and researched and made my very own notepads and boy am so unbelievably proud of how these turned out. Printed on high quality paper (you wouldn’t expect anything different would you?!) designed with complimentary colours to the designs in the bottom left hand corner these pads will brighten up your desk and give you colleagues notepad envy! All headed with ‘To Do’ and footed with ‘Have a Great Day…’ these are super delightful. If you are like me and enjoy writing with fine liners then you know that using this inky style pen can be a nightmare with most pads, often seeping through to the back and leaving unsharp blurred edges to your words. Well don’t you worry, I have your back here, tried and tested with a black fine liner, these notepads didn’t bleed or seep through the back nor did they bleed and blur the edges of your words. Hand bound and hand stamped with the logo on the backing card, this new product is one of my absolute favourites.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at these new products. I am so delighted with how they came out and I hope you enjoy receiving your orders and much as I have enjoyed designing and creating them. Sorry this blog is a day later than usual but I wanted to show you ALL the new products and the notepads didn’t launch until Monday 3rd May.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Until next time

5 Instagram accounts you need to follow

Instagram, a place we can get lost for hours just scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Strangely addictive with millions of accounts to follow and enjoy. Social media can be a dark place, we can sometimes judge ourselves on how other’s portray their lives on instagram which can have a detrimental effect on our own mental state. We need to remember that people are only posting the positive in their life, they are hardly going to crack out their phone mid argument with their other halves for us to see are they!?

I recently did a little declutter of my instagram and stuck with accounts that inspire me, make me smile with accounts and people that are really relatable. Here are my top 5 accounts I love and follow and whose content I really enjoy. These accounts are pretty big and DO NOT need a mention from little old me and the handful of delightful people that read my blogs to talk about them. This post is for you guys, to add a new account to your Insta that brings you joy and laughter and inspiration.

Let me know if you already follow any of these accounts already or if you start following them after I’ve recommended and what you think.

Jamie genevieve

Minimal Quote with Modern Abstract Shapes Instagram Post.png

The QUEEN of Glasgow herself. Make up artist, turned influencer, turned brand creator and owner with her recently launched make up brand - Vieve. She hasn't earned her 1M plus followers without hard work and dedication that is for sure and you can see that in her content, her aesthetic is super stunning. The make up community on social media see’s it’s fair share of drama, if you are like me and love a good make up tutorial you will know! But Jamie stays well clear from the drama, emitting such a positive vibe through her account she is so chilled and enjoys a more holistic approach to life. A real positive beauty account to follow, full of good vibes and fantastic recommendations - I have bought many a beauty product from the recommendation from this lady and I have not been disappointed. Working with her husband Jack and her 2 dogs she provides a real feel good vibe through her Insta. And to make her EVEN better, I recently went to view a wedding venue to which Jamie had been to attending a GHD event a couple of year prior, the woman at the venue told me she was one of her faves from the trip and that she was just as lovely, funny and down to earth as she comes across online. WIN

rosie ramsey

Minimal Quote with Modern Abstract Shapes Instagram Post copy.png

I couldn’t do this post without mentioning this lady. I have briefly spoken about Rosie when discussing podcasts as she is co host of Shagged Married Annoyed. Rosie is a breath of fresh air on Instagram. So refreshingly honest and real, she doesn’t sugar coat life as a mother of 2 sons. She openly discusses the struggles she has found with having a new born, to the struggle of having a young child that really makes you feel like you are not alone. Hilariously funny, a proper North Eastern lass she is a total delight and joy to follow. She really makes you feel like you are not alone and will openly chat about things that other instagram accounts shy away from. If you are looking for an account that is real and honest then Rosie Ramsay is your gal!

Lottie’s house build

Minimal Quote with Modern Abstract Shapes Instagram Post copy 2.png

If you enjoy looking at peoples homes and grabbing some interior design inspo, then check out Lottie’s House build. This account documents the creators house renovation from a standard detached house into a glorious, spacious, beautiful home. Her photography is brilliant but her interior design skills really are something to behold. I love grabbing design ideas as we work on our home and I have taken some elements from this account and added them to ours. Not only has she done a full house renovation (I think she has done a few more so is a seasoned pro at it now!) but she is a single mum of 3 boys. Not only is her design inspirational but her ability to undertake such a project, run a successful instagram account and bring up 3 boys is seriously inspiring.

lorna luxe

Minimal Quote with Modern Abstract Shapes Instagram Post copy 3.png

This is the fashion account to end all fashion accounts. Air hostess turned instagram curator Lorna Luxe is the ultimate fashionista. She fills her stories with new season fashion inspiration and creates the most beautiful outfits mixed with designer and high street. Her collaboration with ‘In the Style’ is a mix of high fashion come easy to wear pieces and all at a totally affordable price point giving you that designer look without the designer price tag. The queen of the mirror pose, you probably recreate these poses without knowing she’s done it first. A real fashion inspiration with a touch of beauty mixed in, she gives you a sneak peak into designer luxury. A keen jet setter (when allowed) her content enables you to escape with her, from Venice to Santorini and everywhere in between, her composition in her photography is just perfect. A real great account to get lost in and a great account to watch stories daily with all sorts of beauty and fashion tips and tricks. PLUS she is great at replying to your DM’s - a really lovely lady.

emma’s rectangle

Minimal Quote with Modern Abstract Shapes Instagram Post.png

This is an account I have followed for a couple of years and can honestly say Emma is one content creator I enjoy seeing gain success. A young lady based down south Emma has had her fair share of up’s and down’s in this social media world. Starting as a make up account - which is how I found her - she has now found her niche as more of a lifestyle account which is seeing her platform grow and grow. A couple of years ago Emma underwent a huge lifestyle change, creating a healthier version of herself and loosing a significant amount of weight has subsequently enabled her to focus her content on other areas and not just make up and beauty. Whilst her make up and beauty content is super enjoyable - it is her lifestyle, fashion and healthy eating posts that seem to really get people engaged. She is such a positive face on social media and is a real inspiration into making lifestyle changes for a healthier and better version of yourself. She is very real and not afraid to say when she is having a bad day which makes her super relatable. Another account that isn’t scared to discuss ‘taboo’ topics she really opens up about an array of things that make her so enjoyable to watch she really makes you feel like you are just watching a friend chatting away.

how to unwind after a long day

Tips to switch off, unwind and relax after a hectic day at work

So we’ve talked about tips on self care and we have also discussed creating a good morning routine to get you up and ready to tackle the day, but what about at the end of the day? Many of us have busy and stressful jobs and it is so important to find ways to switch off, and unwind. It is easy to be constantly thinking about work, especially when you work in a high pressure environment with sharp deadlines but it is important to be able to switch off, for your own sanity!

So if you struggle to find ways to switch off then keep reading, below are ways I unwind and switch off after a long day. I hope there is something here that you can introduce to your evening routines.

reflect on the day

I love to journal. I have mentioned before I have a diary come journal and I find it really helps keep my mind on track and my mental space healthy. After each day I write the best thing about the day, even when I have had a really bad day. When I lost by Billy Boodles I really really struggled, it took its toll on me, but every day I wrote something positive that had happened that day, even the day after, and I found it help keep me grounded, keep me out of that black hole of unhealthy self pity and refocused my mind on the good things at a time that was so hard.

After a hard day, just take 5-10 minutes after work, reflect on the day and remember that good thing about that day, amongst all the rubbish that had happened. It can be something such as ‘a certain person smiled at me’ or it could be ‘I got a pay rise’. Anything big or small that you felt was positive about your day I encourage you to write it in your diary or journal.

Also if something or someone really upset you get it off your chest, write it down in your diary, how it made you feel, why it made you feel such a way and what can you do to rectify feeling that way. Maybe that person didn’t intentionally not wave back at you, maybe they just didn't see you. With loosing Billy, I was so upset every day for a good week I wrote why I was feeling that why, I felt guilt as it was me who was walking him at that time, but I had to realise that it wasn't my fault, nor was it the drivers fault, but the nature of lurchers is they chase and run and that when they see something move they want to catch that thing. It wasn't anybodies fault but just an awful accident. By writing this down and writing down my feelings it really helped me combat those dark feelings of hurt, anger and upset. I really recommend this. Get the day off your chest out of you mind and onto paper. You can then reflect on this down the line but it is a really great way to end the working day.

podcast and walk

I know, I go on about walking and listening to a podcast in every aspect of wellness but I find it so helpful and I find it really helps keep me in a great state of mind. I tend to do my daily walk in my lunch hour but if I am feel particularly tense and my mind feels like it is about to explode I pop in my ear phones and off I go. It might only be 20 minutes to half an hour but it is a great way to really keep your mind healthy. Fresh air really helps to keep my mind and body healthy.

You are probably wondering why I always encourage you to listen to a podcast and not music, I suppose it is personal preference. For me I find listening to a podcast is like having a friend chatting to you. I find that listening to a podcast you can choose something that makes you laugh, something that will educate you or something that is just like listening to friends talk about topics that interest you. For me podcasts can bring so much more variety. But there will be people that will resonate with music much more, which is totally fine. Whatever your preference pick something that can help you just leave the day behind whilst you take in that dose of fresh air.

grab that bath

Grabbing a bath is something that really helps me unwind. Giving myself an hour after work to just have a little pamper is something that I find really works. I am left feeling relaxed and I know the next day I will still be feeling great after. My tip, grab your favourite exfoliator, I LOVE the Sol de Janeiro range, they have two amazing scrubs, the Brazilian Bod Buff all over Mask and Scrub and Bum Bum Body Scrub. The scent is incredible for one, but it also really buffs the skin, removes those flaky dry patches and leaves your skin feeling unbelievable afterwards. Scrub into your body and then submerge into your hot bath and soak the scrub off. Take this chance to read for half an hour or pop on some music. When you get out pat yourself dry and smother yourself in body butter, try the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream. Your body will thank you, and you can thank me later. Those legs will the summer ready before you know it!

Grab a vino

I am not a huge drinker myself but sometimes just grabbing that glass of red or white or rose, whatever your preference, is just what is needed after a long day. I am not one to encourage anyone to turn to drink after a bad day but sometimes, after a lovely bath it is nice to treat yourself to that fancy wine and pour yourself a glass to unwind.

cook dinner

Something so simple, but really effective. I love cooking so I find it very relaxing cooking dinner for me and my fiancé. Grabbing a take away after a long day, full of stodgy fats and grease, won’t enhance your mood. It can leave you feeling bloated and lethargic which totally defeats the object of spending this time to unwind and relax. Filling your body with good wholesome food, getting those veggies in getting a good dose of that protein in your body, will make you feel ten times better, and when you feel better in your body, your mind feels better too. So with that glass of wine in hand get that oven on and start cooking. I really recommend Madeline Shaw’s recipe books, they are full of tasty, wholesome food with stacks of health benefits. To find out more about her and grab some tasty recipes then go visit her website HERE

For those of you that aren’t big cookers, don’t cook often or are new to cooking then I also recommend signing onto Hello Fresh. I have Hello Fresh delivered to my door 3 times a week for me and Dave and the food is simply delicious. All the ingredients are pre measured out so it’s really time effective, the instructions are really easy to follow and the food tastes amazing. It is a great way to start to get into cooking. I find them so useful when I have been for a work out in the evening or Dave is going to be a little later back as they are quick and easy to make. I have to admit I was a little sceptical at first but I really rate it. It also helps to introduce a little more variety to your diet with all their variety in recipes.

netflix and chill

I enjoy nothing more than getting on the sofa with Dave and my dog Jag and watching some TV for an hour or so. Netflix obviously has lots of choice, but I also like to check into Sky Movies. Whatever your choice, get a good movie or start a great series with your partner, dog or just you and your glass of wine and enjoy doing absolutely nothing but getting lost in the plot of whatever you are watching.

get to bed at a reasonable hour

Being busy at work, having a hectic day, you need to make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. I get to bed around 9:30pm. I take a soothing drink to bed with me, I love a Lavender and Chamomile tea. I encourage you to read for half an hour before you fall to sleep, it really helps to get those eyes heavy and just enables you to totally forget about the day. Another thing I recommend to do is a sleep meditation. I have spoken about sleep cove in my Podcast Blog but I really can’t recommend it enough. Just to get that really deep sleep, to forget about a particularly stressful day at work, it is the best thing I have found to help. Getting a good night sleep is so important for every evening, but if you have had a super gruelling day it is even more important to make sure you give your mind and body time to totally recover.

I think that pretty much concludes the series on tips for looking after yourself and giving yourself time throughout the day and one-off treats for self care and self love.

I hope that in this mini series of tips and tricks I find useful for me in my everyday life, you find something for yourself. It is so important to look after ourselves and keep our minds and bodies healthy, because if we don’t look after ourselves how can we possibly look after anyone else.

I hope you are all having this wonderful spring weather and enjoying a little more freedom with our second phase of the road map out of lockdown well underway.

Look after yourselves and until next time

morning routine

My morning routine and tips for you to start your day in the best way

The morning, the alarm goes off and most of us totally dread getting up. This was definitely me. When my alarm went off I would press snooze, snooze and snooze again and then I would FINALLY get myself out of bed and stumble into work. Since starting my new job and because this job is no where near as physical as riding racehorses was I really wanted to embrace this new lifestyle and get into some really healthy habits and the first one was sorting out a good morning routine to help maximise energy, start the day positively and keep in shape. So here is my morning routine and I really hope that some of the below comes in useful for you and you can add this to your morning routine.

set your alarm earlier

I know, everyone says you need to get up early, but honestly it really works. I would suggest setting your alarm approximately 2 hours before you need to leave for work/start work. I work from home and my working day starts at 9am, I set my alarm for 7am. This is a great time to wake up - not the crack of dawn but early enough to catch the full day. I will be out of my bed by 7:15 latest.

hydrate

I have to admit, I can slack on this bit but I am getting better, I promise! I used to be a get up and get a cuppa in straight away, I am not a coffee drinker so tea is my caffeine fix. But stop reaching for that regular brew or coffee and hydrate your body first. I now get up and get in a glass of water and make a mug of matcha tea. Matcha tea is such a great way to start your day, it has an abundance of health benefits, as well as that much needed caffeine boost we need to get us awake and on the go. Unlike the caffeine you find in coffee that can make you jittery, matcha tea provides you with a much calmer and focused release of energy that actually lasts a lot longer than coffee, win! This normally takes me to approximately 7:30 am.

exercise

Get that body moving. After I have had my water and matcha tea I do, roughly, a 30 minute work out. 3 days a week I head to the pool and swim for 30 minutes (when we are allowed back in the gyms that is) and the other 4 days I do 20-40 minutes of yoga. (2 of which are work mornings). Such a great way to wake the body up and get the mind going. Morning work outs can seem a bit daunting but swimming and yoga are low impact work outs that won’t shock the body too much. When I do spin classes or a serious work out I opt to do this in the evenings when my body is fully warmed up and has been moving throughout the day. In addition, swimming is a great time to meditate and get your mind set for the day. I am normally back from the pool/finished yoga for around 8:10am.

shower time

Nothing beats a quick shower post work out in the morning, another way to make sure you are really awake and present. Use a shower gel that is energising, ESPA and Rituals do great energy boosting/ post work out shower gels that really help boot your energy. When I have been to the pool I will wash my hair but the other days I won’t wash my hair in the morning. Post shower be sure to give you body some love and slather on your favourite body butter!

look after your skin

After my shower I always spend time on my skin care. Tone, serums, eye cream, moisturiser and SPF. Give yourself a few minutes to really get those products into your skin and get your skin glowing. This is just a great way to prep yourself for the day ahead, a little face massage when applying the product will help reduce puffiness and leave you bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to tackle the day. Shower and skin care will normally take me to 8:30am.

get dressed

An obvious one I know but bare with me. We have all spent the last year in lockdown and lounge wear has just become the norm, and whilst I am all up for keeping comfy and cosy, getting and actual outfit on for work just makes you feel more put together and totally removes the blurred line from home to work. I don’t wear a suit of course not, I work from home, I do however like to pop on some over sized mum jeans, maybe leather leggings, a long skirt, teamed up with an over sized shirt or a chunky knit sweater maybe even a logo t-shirt. Whatever your style get dressed and get an outfit on. You will feel less slobbish and more inclined to actually work! Honestly!

If you work in an office than this part isn’t really relevant for you - but do pop on that power suit, get yourself in that outfit that makes you feel confident and you will go and smash your day!

make up, hair and perfume

I am aware not all of us are make up wearers and trust me I do MINIMUM for work as I am sat on my computer all day and my camera for meetings is pretty flattering (thank the lord!) If you are like me and like to just do a little bit of something to make you feel put together then do. I like to pop on a small bit of foundation or concealer (depending on how my skin is behaving!) a touch of bronzer and mascara and I am ready to go.

I brush my hair through - on days that I have washed it I literally just dry the real wetness out of it and leave it damp. I might tie it up, whatever I choose to do I make sure my hair is somewhat respectable and put together.

Finally, give yourself a spritz of perfume. Smelling good just makes me feel finished. I am a total perfume addict - it is one area I do have expensive taste in (sorry Dave!) but a quick spritz of perfume after you’ve finished getting ready really just completes the morning routine and adds that little finishing touch.

Dressing, make up hair and perfume only takes me 15 minutes, I really don’t slave over my appearance but I do just enough to feel put together and ready. This normally takes me to around 8:45am

brew and breakfast

This is when I take the opportunity to have a proper mug of Yorkshire tea! I love a good brew but I try not to drink too much tea in the day and switch in herbal teas instead but at this point I let myself have a lovely strong cuppa and some breakfast. This brings me nicely to 9am and time to get logged on and start my day!

morning intentions and planning

I have talked about this tip a couple of times but I really swear by it. Whilst my computer is booting up and I am logging on I get my diary out, I set my morning intention which can be anything from ‘know your worth and be confident in your ability’ to ‘I intend to make at least one person smile today.’ It is really great at giving yourself a positive mind set for the day. I also look in my diary at what meetings I have, I go through my emails and I plan my day. What I need to get done, who I need to speak to, what I need to start getting on with etc etc. It really keeps me focused and on task. It is a habit I really encourage you to do to maximise productivity whilst not letting your brain explode! And this is something you can do whether you work from home or in an office.

mid morning

If you are like me and work from home then you will understand the urge to snack, snack, snack!! Mid morning I have a smoothie with a scoop of protein powder in it. It just keeps those cravings at bay and keeps me going until lunch.

I also make sure I have a jug of water in my office where I can keep hydrated throughout the day which also helps keep those urges to snack at bay!

I hope that you have enjoyed this blog and liked having a glimpse of my morning routine. Please don’t feel bad if you don’t/ can’t do all of the above. I have days where I cannot stick to this routine for whatever reason and it is totally fine. We are all in different positions with different family commitments and different working environments. I do hope though, that something from above resonates with you and you feel you can take it into you own lives and lifestyles and enjoy the benefits. I have noticed a significant improvement in my focus, my energy levels and my general health since embracing the habits above so please give some of them a go.

Have.a wonderful week

Until next time

20 selfcare tips

20 tips to give yourself some much needed self love

This year, more than any other, selfceare has been a huge topic of conversation. But despite living through a global pandemic it is always important to look after yourself and take selfceare seriously. For us to continue to perform to the standards we wish - whether that is being a full time mum, or working in the fast paced corporate world, taking time for yourself is seriously important. The most important thing to remember is to NOT feel guilty. this is a pretty common thought for many but everyone needs a time out - to indulge in ones self, if you can’t look after yourself how can you expect to look after anyone else? We all have very different lifestyles and some of us are able to take a full day to re set and recharge and some of us only have a quick half an hour to re set and re charge. Whatever your time frame I have a little something for you all.

1.sleep

IMG_4368.jpg

Everyone can do this. Getting a good nights sleep is the 1st step in looking after yourself. Having a good nights sleep increases productivity and concentration as well as improving athletic performance meaning you will gain more from your work outs. Having a solid 7-9 hours sleep also helps strengthen your immune system, as when you’re asleep your body heals, repairs, regenerates and recovers which helps your body fight off infections. All in all sleep is super important for us and our ability to perform. If sleep is something you struggle with then check out my blog about podcasts recommendations as I talk about a great podcast that helps you drop off to sleep.

2. tech detox

I find this so important. We get so consumed by social media and being on our phones or laptops that we find time is passing us by and we haven’t made those memories that we wish to because we have our heads stuck in our phone - I am totally guilty of this. Taking a day off your phone is a great way to focus on yourself and your family, I aim for once a week, I take a day where I walk the dog, meet with friends and family and leave my phone in my pocket (I always take it with me just incase I need to call anyone in an emergency) We can get so consumed by the life people choose to show online that we strive to live a totally unrealistic life. Put that phone away, take a time out of social media and I can guarantee that you will feel so much better for it.

3. social media declutter

It’s time to get rid of those that bring negativity in your life. Those who don’t bring you joy, that bring you frustration on your newsfeed or put you down - GET RID! Instead fill your friends with positive people, those who bring you up and make you smile. Life is far to short to put up with negativity and you will find removing these people from your life will make you feel so much better within yourself - thank me later.

4. take 20-30 mins a day and go for a walk

tempImagesGGhaM.jpg

Having a dog means I spend at least an hour a day walking, and when I come home I notice the difference immediately in my mood and when I get him out in my lunch hour I notice my ability to focus improve and as a result my productivity post lunch increases beating that midday slump. You don’t need to go out for an hour but if you can squeeze in 20-30 mins a day to walk around the block and get that fresh air in your lungs you will certainly feel the positive effects for it. Being outdoors helps lower blood pressure due to the reduction in the stress-related hormone cortisol and adrenaline. And if you’re still not convinced then I can tell you it helps slow down the ageing process - so go get those trainers on and add a small walk a day to your routine.

5. buy yourself some flowers

IMG_4369.jpg

Simple but effective - I love having fresh flowers in my kitchen window. It really brightens up my mood as well as my kitchen. Surprising what some flowers can do.

6. look after your skin

Cleansing-Main_1024x1024.jpg

This selfceare tip is one that you can just add into your morning and evening routine without adding much time at all. Develop a good skin care routine, look after your skin, love your skin and take an extra five minutes when you wake and and before bed to do so. If we can’t get to the spa’s then bring the spa to the home. For me when my skin is looking dull and breaking out it really effects my confidence and when my confidence is low my mood isn’t great either. I will discuss my own personal skincare routine and morning routine another time but if your looking for good skincare recommendations/ routines (it is a total mind field I know!) then HERE is a great article to help you work it all out.

7. get a beauty treatment

I know this is a tip for the future but when we can, definitely go book a beauty treatment at you local beauty salon. I love to go for a facial every 6-8 weeks, its such a treat but it really does make me feel amazing afterwards. I also love a spa day - it is a bit of an indulgence but one that is definitely worth it to recharge those batteries. My fiancé loves to play golf and with golf resorts there tends to be a spa - win win for us both, I don’t complain about the copious amounts of golf he insists on playing and he doesn’t complain about the spa bill afterwards.

8. drinks lots of water

IMG_4371.jpg

This slots in pretty nicely with the looking after your skin topic, drinking lots of water is super important not just for your skin but it also helps aid digestion, helps maintain blood pressure, flushes body waste, makes minerals and nutrients accessible, boost exercise performance, helps with weight loss and most importantly for up and coming weeks - helps prevent a hangover! It really is a miracle worker and it costs nothing and takes no time. Boring I know but GET YOUR WATER INTAKE!!!

9. make time for family and friends

So important to maintain those relationships because an hour with good friends or an afternoon with the family can just instantly improve your mood and make you feel so much better almost instantly. There is nothing much else to add to this, but don’t forget to make the time for your nearest and dearest - I am in fact out with mine this very day walking and I know I will feel so much better for it.

10. meditate

I can see the eye roles as you read but don’t skip past this bit just yet! Meditation has a bit of stigma of being a thing that ‘hippies’ do but alas it is not. Meditation is such a great way to reset your mind and clear out the junk that is just cluttering your brain. It can help manage stress, increases self awareness, increases creativity and imagination, increases patience and tolerance, brings you back to the present and reduces those negative emotions. All in all as a self care technique you really cannot go wrong with a 5 min meditation. So go on, get meditating!

11. plan a long weekend away

IMG_0793 2.JPG

An absolute must when it is safe to do so. It can be a long weekend abroad or a long weekend in good old Blighty, wherever you choose be sure that taking this time away from the home is the perfect way to look after yourself and recharge your batteries. We are all getting pretty sick of staying in our own four walls and so when we can this is one tip I cannot recommend enough, for your own sanity!! Go visit that place you always wanted to, go visit that friend or family member that lives far away, just go and enjoy being away from home it will do you the world of good and when you come back you will feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle any challenge that comes your way! I personally LOVE Venice for a long weekend. It is unlike anywhere else you will ever visit and the food is out of this world!!

12. indulge in essential oils

I am not sure how scientific essentials oils are to boosting your mood, but I love burning some oils. Adding a couple of drops to a bath or burning some oils in a lovely clean and tidy living room really helps me unwind and relax and switch off for the day. If you are like me and really sensitive to scents then this is a great tip to help you feel relaxed and content. A little tip - add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil to your steam mop, it will leave you whole house smelling unbelievable.

13. run a bath and unwind

ab14f2a0160a319c91bf3b3cf6cc6f82.jpg

If you can take the whole evening to indulge in yourself then get that bath run, add you favourite bath bomb (yes I am a massive bath bomb addict - LUSH cosmetics are a saviour) or bath salts, light some scented candles give yourself a full body exfoliate pop on a face mask and stick on your favourite podcast and switch off. I try and give myself a full evening pamper session every couple of weeks. It is such a good way to shut out the world for an hour and forget all the craziness that is surrounding us at the moment. For me when I feel like I look my best I feel it reflects in my mood. So take that evening off, leave dad with the kids, switch off your notifications and give yourself a proper pamper session.

14. give yourself a mani/pedi

manicure_pedicure7.jpg

Another quick and simple thing to do for yourself. Get the nail file and your favourite polish and give yourself a cute little mani/pedi. A freshly painted set of fingers and toes just finishes of a pamper session and makes you feel finished and refined.

15. do something creative

Get those paints out, buy yourself an adult colouring book, start writing or knitting. Whatever creative outlet that you have an interest in, go and do it. Getting creative just releases all those tensions and takes you to another place. When I am painting I just enjoy the whole process, I enjoy turning a blank piece of white paper into something beautiful and fun. The sense of accomplishment is so uplifting and its a little task you can do if you have children, have a craft day and see the joy it brings.

16. declutter and get organised

If you haven’t watched The Home Edit on Netflix then stop what you are doing and go watch it! Home Organisation at its utter finest.

On a serious note though decluttering your space, tidying and cleaning the home really helps improve my mood. I find it so hard to concentrate when my room and home is a mess and cluttered. Clearing your space clears your mind. Organise your home and it helps make the most laborious tasks so much easier.

17. cocktail night with the girls

mojito-cocktails-814a3f7.jpg

Now we can have 6 outside to gather go and organise a cocktail night with the girls in your garden. With the year that we have had having fun and a good old laugh with your besties has been near impossible and it really does take its toll on your mind. For some fun pick 6 cocktail recipes write them down fold them up and put them in a bowl then all pick one and that is the cocktail you have to make for you all. Friends, good weather and cocktails - what a way to boost your mood.

18. journal

tempImage2gOLQL.gif

I find this so useful. In the morning whilst my computer is loading I get my diary out and I write my daily intention, tasks, what I want to accomplish that day and when the day is done I make a note of the best thing about the day. It really helps keep me focused, on task and most importantly positive. My diary has monthly goal setting, monthly reflections and weekly goal setting, weekly habit tracker and weekly reflections as well as keeping me organised and positive through out the month. I use The Inspired Stories Daily Planner, a total life saver, the brand is just amazing. But keeping a diary and journal is such a help for me and I would recommend adding this to you daily to do’s.

19. read a good book

Maybe you’re having a soak in the bath, maybe you sunning it in the garden or maybe you're having a quiet hour on the sofa, grab yourself a good book. Reading is something I really enjoy, I use is as a sense of escapism. There is nothing quite like getting totally lost in a good book. It really is a great way to unwind and doesn’t take much effort at all.

20. develop a good morning routine

This is so important in setting you up for the day ahead. If you get up late and find yourself rushing around to get to work on time, you will turn up feeling unsettled, half asleep and you will seem to be trying to catch your tail all day. Instead, set your alarm nice and early, get up, maybe do half an hour of yoga, or get that morning work out in. By getting active first thing you get your body moving and your mind active and will find that you are far more productive at work as a result. I will write a whole blog about my morning routine at some stage but since getting up and being active before work I have noticed a considerable change in my mental attitude at work.

So there we have it, 20 tips for selfceare that I have found has helped me and I encourage anyone of you to take on one or two of these for yourself. So many things can help you look after your own well being, they don’t have to be time consuming or really expensive they can just be small changes in routine that will reap stacks of rewards for you.

I hope that you have enjoyed this blog, it’s been a lengthy one so thank you for staying with me!

Have a wonderful week and until next time, stay safe.

the Nursery collection

The Nursery Collection has arrived.

the collection

This weekend see’s the first day of Spring (wahoo) and with that we hope for finer weather, lots of sunshine and blue skies. It is a time where many of us embark upon a Spring Clean, gutting out the wardrobe, bringing out those summer clothes as the weather improves and doing that good old deep clean, cleaning away the winter and the horrible, muddy weather that winter entails. We are currently in the process of a kitchen renovation - which I cannot wait to share with you. It’s a pretty big change and we are so excited for it to be complete. We have also taken the time to completely empty the wardrobes. It’s surprising how much crap two people can accumulate. So as Spring arrives I have decided it would be the perfect time to launch the Nursery Collection.

The Spring brings connotations of new life, spring lambs are bouncing around the fields and there is a sense of new beginnings as we look to Easter and all that provokes. I think that the Nursery Collection fits in so well with all of these notions. The thought of new life, becoming a Mum or Dad for the first time, or maybe again, or maybe you are looking for the perfect gift for an expectant parent or a friend that has just given birth, it all syncs together so well. The collection will comprise of four original watercolour prints. All the prints are of the animals in their infant form which I think is just perfect for the Nursery and decorating the walls of your infant. All prints will be printed to A4 size - bigger than the prints from the Main Collection and will have the option to be personalised with the name the child that the print is for and the day that they were born. Alternatively you don’t have to personalise them, and can have them as a set in the nursery or have the middle personalised and two plain prints either side. The possibilities are endless!! As with the main collection. the prints will come mounted in an ivory mount.

I am beyond excited to launch this collection and share it with you all. It is a collection I have had in the back of my mind from the very start - I toyed with the idea of launching the brand with this collection but thought it would be better to postpone it until spring for the reasons I have already discussed. I really hope you enjoy the collection as much as I have enjoyed pouting it together. I cannot wait to expand the collection in the future and I am sure that it is going to be a real popular element to Maisie Turner Designs. To shop the collection click HERE.

the journey so far …

So we are exactly 4 weeks into the business launching and it has been a brilliant 4 weeks. I cannot thank you all enough for your support throughout. From the orders that have come in, to the social media posts that have been shared to those who have signed up to my mailing list. All is just so incredible and I have loved the process so far.

Starting a new business is tough, you don’t set up a website and social media platforms and all of a sudden have thousand’s of followers and are inundated with orders. Far from it. It is a slow burner for sure, but that is ok, the brand will grow steadily and the support that you have shown me so far is already ensuring that I am gaining new followers and new orders. I hope all of you that have ordered from me have enjoyed your packages, the feedback has been great so far which is so lovely as it takes a lot of hard work to get something such as this up and running.

I haven’t come across many things that haven’t worked as such. The main thing that I have found is the boxes I used for the bookmarks, I was so conscious about them getting squashed but the boxes were just a little too deep and the postage was costing an arm and a leg and it was ending up I was coming out of the process out of pocket. I have ordered some more postal boxes which are not quite as deep and will be able to fit into the letterbox which will be much better, but they will still be deep enough to not squish the tassels. Win, win.

Other than that slight snag the rest of the process so far has been pretty stress free. I love packing up orders, I find it so relaxing. As many of you that have ordered things from me have liked the packaging I must take the time too mention Paper Chic Plans. It is a little stationary company run by Claudia, her vlogs and instagram reels are beyond amazing and so therapeutic to watch, I highly recommend you follow her HERE . But this company was a HUGE inspiration to my packaging and how I decided to package my orders. Her aesthetic is out of this world and I wanted to make sure I gave her the mention that she deserves as she has been a great inspiration to me throughout this process. If any of you are looking for diary stickers, pins, washi tape please check her small business out - Paper Chic Plans

Thats all folks

And that rounds up another weekly blog, Not overly exciting in terms of giving you any tips and recommendations but I really wanted to fill you in on the new collection launching tomorrow. I hope you have enjoyed reading this snippet into my life and the very beginning process of setting up your own small business. If any of you are in the same position as myself - keep going, It’s not easy. It’s not all go go go thousands of people following you and visiting your site. It is a hard slog, it is so competitive but just keep faith in what you are trying to achieve, keep your eye on the goals you have set out for yourself because you will get there. It just may take longer than you thought.

Have a great week guys.

Until Next Time

Tips for starting a new job/getting back into the workplace

COVID has had such a huge effect on all of us when it comes to work. People have lost their jobs, people have been on furlough or been forced to work from home, and some people have seen this opportunity to make a career change and look for a new job. Of course there are people who have remained in full time work and still love what they do, which is great. It’s not always easy to settle back into a routine or find a totally new routine with a new job, I completely feel you there.

I have this little side business if you will, and I love spending evenings painting and doing things to my website and mumbling along with it all. I especially LOVE writing a weekly blog, it is almost like my therapy (a little cliche I know!) but this doesn't make me any money and my website is just bumbling along and orders are trickling in and I love it and so grateful for the support I have received from people. There is no pressure for me to make lots of money from this and it means that I can let my following and my business grow ‘organically’ when and as it will. This obviously means that I need a ‘proper’ job, so too speak. I have worked in racing for 12 years now - I won’t overly get into that just yet, but the Monday after I launched my business I started a brand new job for a racing charity. And I bloody love it!! But it’s not easy adjusting and it occurred to me I won’t be the only one in this position and as we see people start to return to work offices in the next month or so, and people are starting new jobs if they have been made redundant, I thought it would be great for me to share with you my tips, things I have found that have helped me adjust to my new job role.

BE yourself

I know, I know, another cliche bit of advice but so so so true. In society we have external pressures to be or act a certain way and this can extend to the work place. Starting a new job you can feel like you must also act a certain way or be someone you maybe aren’t. But stay true to yourself no matter what. YOU got that job. YOU impressed on interview so YOU are exactly what they wanted for the position. Don’t feel pressure to change in anyway when you start a new job and remember that YOU are good enough.

make the effort

When I started my new job I was really lucky in that the whole team were great and many scheduled in time to do a ‘virtual’ introduction (COVID times - thank god for video conferencing software), where we had a 30 min chat, spoke about our back grounds before working at the organisation and a little bit about the job role they had and the role they played in the organisation. Some people who had super busy diaries I went out and scheduled in an introduction. It was such a great way to get to know the team and meet people and connect. I couldn't recommend this enough. Making an effort with your new colleagues is invaluable and will really help you adjust to your new role and help you feel part of the team much faster. If you are getting back to the office after working from home, go and do the rounds, say hello, how are you a quick 5 minutes out of your day will not go unnoticed and help get you settled back into the office.

be organised

This is so important. Going into a new job where you are learning the ropes, getting to understand how the organisation works and the ins and outs means being organised is so important. I LOVE the ‘Inspired Stories’ diaries. They are amazing and an absolute god send for me. I love to have my Monthly calendar planned out so I can have a quick glance at what I have on and everyday I can write my meetings down, things I need to get done and any additional notes. They are quite honestly amazing and 100% one of my favourite brands.

I have the Daily Planner which is no long available as its dated from Jan 1st to Dec 31st but the have so many other options and undated options check them out HERE

I have the Daily Planner which is no long available as its dated from Jan 1st to Dec 31st but the have so many other options and undated options check them out HERE

get a notebook

On the same vain as above, having a notebook is so useful. When you are starting a new job there is so much to take in, it is impossible for your mind to remember it all. Having a note book to write down important things you need to no, and notes from meetings is really helpful. I make a note of the date at the top of the page everyday and then make whatever notes I need to throughout the day. I highlight elements that maybe important and I also washi-tape across the top of important pages such as formatting for newsletters and press releases or key information that is super relevant for the job role and makes those pages really easy to find.

This one is from WHsmith. They have a great collection and so affordable. Shop notebooks HERE

be open to learning

A major thing about starting any new job is realising you are on a learning curve. You may have experience in the position you are in or maybe, like me, it is all pretty new, either way you will still be learning about the role. It’s not always easy, and sometimes you may feel out of your depth - this has been me a couple of times in the last week - but it’s ok and it is totally normal. All organisations do things differently, you may think you know exactly what you need to do and how it should be done, but soon find out that this organisation do things differently and expect different things. You will make mistakes. Be open to learning new ways to do thing, learn new techniques and programmes, and most importantly just learning about your job and how your role slots into the organisation. It’s totally fine to not no it all and asking your colleagues for help is not a sign of weakness or stupidity. My regional manager and the person who does my role in the south, must get a face time from me everyday sometimes multiple times a day, and they are so willing to help, I guarantee you will have the same support in your place of work. Just be open to learn, learn, learn.

get yourself a morning routine

Getting into some healthy morning habits is key to setting yourself up for the day. I will do a whole separate blog on selfceare, and maybe a morning routine blog if it interests you, but for now find a routine that incorporates some healthy habits and stick to it. Get up early, rather than press snooze 5 times and then find yourself rushing around and turning up to work all flustered. Make time to sit down have a cuppa and some breakfast and start your morning as you mean to go on. It really does help set your mind for the whole day.

switch off

At the end of the day just switch off. Starting a new job can be stressful at times. Your mind feels like its in overdrive and it can get on top of you. When you turn your computer off or get through the front door make time to do something that switches your mind mind off and gets you to relax. We can’t keep going at 500 miles an hour and it is easy for us to burn the candle at both ends and if you let this happen you aren’t going to perform to the best of your ability at work and your capacity to take in all the information with be utterly restricted. Again I do have a blog coming up with self-care tips so I don’t want to go to much into it but I wanted to mention this as it is so important for you to remember when you start a new job.

I really hope that some of these tips are useful for those of you that are starting a new job or are anxious about getting back into that work office again. One last thing, enjoy the process, this journey is exciting for you and will open up so many new opportuniyt’s for learning and self development. I wish all of you the VERY best of luck getting back to work or starting your new careers, none of us are alone and take comfort in knowing that at the end of the day everything will be fine. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

See you next week

podcast’s: what to listen to

Whether an avid podcast listener or your new to the podcast, I have complied my top 5 podcasts that I recommend you go and listen to.

As we experienced last year, in lockdown, out of lockdown and back in lockdown, keeping our minds engaged and entertained was a battle I think we all faced. For me podcasts really helped to keep me laughing, learning and relaxed, and for this I can not recommend transitioning to podcasts enough - if you’re not already there. As we got the exciting news from Boris, and the government roadmap was released, I shall still be tuning into my podcasts, and finding new podcasts to accompany me and the transition back to normality and beyond. If you are not an avid podcaster then may I ask why not?!

Whether you are on the commute to work, doing the house chores or simply trying to unwind, podcasts are the very best audio companion. They are so accessible, quick and easy to download and what’s more they are all (usually) free. They don’t demand your unwavering attention and there is a podcast for just about any topic that could possibly pique your interest.

If you are still with me, you must already be a total podcast junkie such as myself or you must want to start listening to them and don’t know where to start. Below are my top 5 recommendations, from laughs to education to sleep. I think I have you covered. If you give any of these a try please leave a comment and let me know if you enjoyed them as much as I do.

sha**ged. Married. annoyed

SMA.jpg

There is a reason this podcast is taking over the download chats. Outrageously funny with no holds barred this is a MUST. Chris and Rosie are a breath of fresh air, so incredibly relatable and real this podcast will leave you in stitches.

Letting us in on the true ups and down of marital life, the mundane, annoying and the downright hilarity of it all. They have open discussions and the ‘what’s your beef’ section, where the couple address habits and things that drive the other mad will have you nodding along in total understanding. They really do remove the rose-tinted-glasses when taking a look into their married life. There is a real underlying of true love for one another, not a soppy and grotesque type but the real, no-one is perfect type, a balance that is so apparent and genuine that you just fail to not acknowledge.

Finally, the ‘questions from the public’ will just leave you utterly stunned and in fits of laughter in equal measure. Chris and Rosie retell the stories, and answer questions in a way only they can. We all know Chris is a brilliant comedian but what you might not realise is Rosie is equally as hilarious, it is a duo just made in heaven. I couldn’t recommend this enough and I find myself laughing out loud when walking the dogs which often results in strange glares and people crossing the road away from me. I would recommend you start from the very 1st episode, they do not follow each other as such, but some of the quips and comments may not make sense and loose there comedic value as they sometimes reference elements from previous episodes.

Not one to listen to with any children around, strong langue and adult content are key elements in this podcast but I can promise you, it will not fail to make you laugh.

the history chicks

HC.jpg

Hosted by 2 American women, this podcast will make History fun and enjoyable. I am a total history fanatic and so I came across this podcast whilst looking for something a little different, something that will educate me and keep my mind active and I stumbled across this gem.

It focuses on inspirational w0men throughout history. The information is relayed so delightfully by Beckett and Susan who aim to introduce female characters to us all whilst encouraging us to go and dig a little deeper ourselves. Listening to this podcast is like listening to a couple of old friends chat, truly warming and so very charming.

Championing our female greats, from Marie Antionette to Beatrix Potter, I can guarantee you will find a fascinating female that you didn't know you wanted to learn about but will be glad you did when you tune in. Very easy to listen too and family friendly, if nothing else it is certainly one to help the children with their history homework.

sleep cove

SC.jpg

I think it is safe to say that the past 12 months has taken its toll on a lot of us, especially mentally. With the continued unknowing of what the future holds, the days of sitting at home, not being able to go to the office and spend evenings with friends, has been immensely hard to deal with. For many sleep can sometimes escape us and the night time can be torturous. Bring in Sleep Cove.

Christopher Fitton’s relaxing voice alone will help guide you to sleep, like a lullaby it will encourage you to let go and switch off. I am, on the whole, a great sleeper, but I do have the odd evening when sleep won’t come - especially when Dave is away. With numerous sleep meditations, hypnosis and sleep stories there is something there that will resonate with you and help you settle. From a sleep hypnosis to Lose Weight and Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle to a sleep meditation for Gratitude and Thankfulness, there is something for everyone.

I have not managed to stay awake through a full episode and I shall be surprised if you aren’t asleep within 20 minutes. When I listen to an episode I sleep so blissfully and deeply that I wake up feeling utterly revitalised. I can’t recommend this podcast enough to guide you to switch off and sleep, it really is a key addition to anyones podcast library.

grounded with louis theroux

LT.jpg

Who doesn’t love Louis Theroux? A fantastic documentarian, who so skilfully delves into American sub-cultures often spending weeks at a time immersing himself within his subjects lifestyle. A national treasure to us Brits, his deeply humane and oddly funny guide through America’s quirky passages bring such joy and interest that going through the last year without a Theroux documentary seemed totally impossible.

Thankfully Louis embarked upon a podcast series which sees that incredible ability to balance pushing and probing his subject to such a point most journalists cannot, whilst retaining that incredible humanity, which we have come to love about him has made for a brilliant podcast.

Through conferencing software Louis Theroux sits down to chat with celebrities that have been of interest to him, whose career’s he has followed and delves into the depths of their upbringing and their climb to the top. From Boy George to Lenny Henry to Helena Bonham Carter, it is a brilliant series that will give you the Theroux fix we have so sorely missed.

2020 saw the emergence of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. As a white, middle class British Female, I realise I am in a state of privilege, I have not had to overcome adversity, I have not suffered judgement on the harshest level and I have coasted through life relatively unscathed by society.

I grew up having it drilled into me to learn and respect other cultures, my mother is incredibly understanding and has worked in schools where 60% of the children came from ethnically diverse backgrounds and so growing up to me the colour of someones skin, their cultural backgrounds and their beliefs were something that I valued and which intrigued me.

Fast forward to 2020 and I am so utterly ashamed and shocked by the continued disregard, prejudice and inequality black people still suffer. Racism surely should not be a thing in todays society, but alas it is. ‘When the Black Live Matter’ movement evolved I felt it encouraged people like myself to go and read and learn about black culture, to understand the hardships they still face and the inequality they still suffer and for that I feel it did some good. The conversation started.

Amidst these turbulent times I came across this podcast upon my research into black history. It focuses on Black-American history but and is a fascinating listen. Hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones, the podcast explores the history of the black slave trade from the very 1st ship load of Africans that landed on American soil, in 1619. Presented through the art of story telling, this podcast enlightens us on how slavery transformed America. I encourage anyone to listen to this podcast, to educate ourselves a little more and understand just how the slave trade really effected those who where so shamelessly forced into it.

Reflecting on 2020

The year that was …

I know it’s late, but as this little blog didn’t launch until end of Feb it means I am a little behind the times. I wanted to still reflect on the year that was 2020 as it was such a crazy, unpredictable and sometimes scary time for us all and so I wanted to share with you my thoughts, feelings and a couple of things I found out about myself during 2020 just incase some of you are feeling the same.

A Global Pandemic, A Global Revolution and months and months of being in Lockdown. All in a single year. But what did this teach us? What have we discovered about ourselves as humans, as people, as a society? I wanted to share my thoughts with you all as I doubt I shall never live through such times ever again.

COVID 19 and the lockdown. Now, I always thought myself pretty happy in my own company, I have spent many winters in India (I will share many stories of my times in India with you all through out many blogs!) and it does mean I spend a lot of time on my own, in a country - whilst amazing and vibrant - is at the opposite end of the spectrum to ol’ Blighty. I love to read and paint both very solitary pursuits, and whilst I love a good party and I love to host and have friends and family over, I tend to be more than happy to have a night in on my own when Dave is away racing. That was until I was told I cannot have friends over whenever I like, I cannot drive to see family or go to the pubs and restaurants when I feel like it. It’s funny isn’t it, that when you are told you can’t have something you seem to crave and desire it more than anything. I have missed my friends, I have missed random messages to pop over for tea or shall we go for a swift vino this evening whilst the boys are racing late. I have missed popping to the spa when Dave is playing golf somewhere and walking around country fares and food festivals, trying cheese and gin till I can no longer consume anymore. I have completely. and utterly missed that social interaction and being able to hug my most favourite people whenever I damn well please. It’s not the materialistic parts of the life pre 2020 that I miss its the companionship, its the certainty that we had, it was the FREEDOM that we once took for granted, When this is all over I have decided to embrace being free to do as I please, to make the effort to see my friends as much as possible - not have the attitude of I can’t be bothered to get ready so i’m going to opt to stay in and watch a film. So as we move into 2021 we shall not forget 2020 in a hurry but we should not take spending time with loved one for granted.

I dare say many of us felt the same, and with the more positive news that Boris told us on Monday night we can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel. By the end of summer it looks like life will resume as ‘normal’, but what will ‘normal’ be now? Will we ever go back to the days of pre 2020? So I sit and anticipate what will happen come summer, if we can resume our normal pursuits and see and hug and kiss those closest to us, let us all hope that this will be a reality. For all those small business, it’s not long now, you will be able to reopen those doors and return to your working life. I for one cannot wait to get my eyebrows tamed by my wonderful sister-in-law-to-be. Any readers in the Stockton area you MUST follow her page and book into to Blossom Brows and Beauty, she is a brow and lash queen.

So enough rambling now from me. Spring is now firmly on the way. As I write this I have the sun blaring in through the windows and doors and I think that adds a sense of positivity that we are over the worse. Lockdown in the bleak, cold and wet winter was less than ideal. But in roughly 3 weeks we will officially be in spring and and with that comes an optimism.

See you all next week.

Welcome

It all begins with an idea.

Welcome to Maisie Turner Designs' website and first ever blog. I am Maisie Turner (soon to be Maisie Allan, a story I will share with you all at a later date) and this is my brand, spanking new business. 2020 saw a lot of change around the world and encouraged some of us to make some big decisions. And so as we continue to live through this crazy and scary time I decided to just put myself out there and try and start my own little side business and see where it leads me. I guess not all bad things came out of this horrendous pandemic for me.

So what is Maisie Turner Designs? Well I am a self taught water colour artist, focusing on animals and the beauty in nature, capturing the expression and fun that these wonderful creatures we share this world with express. I love colour and vivid brush strokes and water marks in my work, I paint rather loose and expressive, much like the subject I choose to paint. I have decided to start this blog to record this journey, a journey I am beyond excited to share with you, to share the trials and tribulations of starting my own business. My life, the ups and the downs, the fun and the sad. To share with you lifestyle wins, things I am loving things I am not loving, things that help me and anything I can recommend to improve ones life. To share with you my business at it grows and I create and launch more products and add to my collections but most importantly I want to enjoy every moment of this unknown and somewhat scary journey of uncertainty that I am about to embark upon.

Who is Maisie Turner? I am engaged to Dave Allan, a flat jockey - that will come with its own stories and laughs along the way in itself. Being with a professional sports person is not as glamorous as it may seem, especially when said person can't go out to tea on a whim and planning any down time and holiday getaways is impossible, but that is a whole other blog for a whole other time. I have one gorgeous and loving step daughter, Nicole, who is a budding artist and at the age of 11 coming up 12 is looking to take me out of a job before I've even begun. Finally I am mother to two wonderful hounds - lurchers to be exact, Billy and Jag (Jag you may think is a rather odd name, he is named after Dave's first Group Success as a jockey on board the horse called Fayr Jag and that's how the hound got his name) We live in North Yorkshire, God's own country some may say, but I shall leave that for you to agree or disagree with. And that is pretty much me in a nutshell.

So as we settle into 2021 and hope for a more positive year I personally cannot wait to see what the future holds and where this next chapter of my life leads to. Let's begin this journey together. Please bear in mind I am not a writer, it will be a case of trial and error, my punctuation may not be the best, I tend to write as a speak but please be patient with me. I am hoping this will be more endearing than annoying but time will tell, I will strive to improve in all aspects of this blogging life. So if you are wanting to jump onboard this journey with me be sure to sign up to be alerted to my new blog posts and lets grow a fun and positive community where we can inspire each other to be the best version of ourselves.

Until next week
